In everyday conversation, the term impotence is often used to describe all forms of male sexual dysfunction, and the term frigidity is applied to all types of female sexual problems. But neither term tells precisely what the problem is. The term incorrectly suggest a permanent rejection of sexuality. They also incorrectly imply that a sexual problem is exclusively that of the female or the male.
The truth is that in most cases, sexual dysfunction involves both partners, and both partners must work at solving the problems.
Many people have problems that arise from early sexual experiences, one of the most common complaints among male college students, for example, is premature ejaculation, the expulsion of semen before or immediately after insertion of the penis into the vagina. Premature ejaculation can be caused by a number of factors. Consider the case of a twenty-four-year old man who went to a therapist after premature ejaculation had thoroughly disrupted relations with his wife. (in his case ejaculation occurred within fifteen to twenty seconds of penetration into his wife’s vagina.) It tuned out that before marriage his sexual encounters had taken place in locations such as the back seat of an automobile, where he had to learned to slow his ejaculations down long enough to satisfy his partner. He needed therapy to overcome these early experience.
Many men troubled by premature ejaculation find that they can train themselves to delay ejaculation by using the “squeeze technique” developed by Masters and Johnson. In this procedure, the man or his partner gives a firm squeeze to the frenulum. (the triangular area on the underside of the penis) just before he feels the urge to ejaculate. With repeated sessions of stimulation almost to the man can often learn to control his ejaculation satisfactorily.
