Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction

On doing sex therapy must fulfill of certain requirement in order the treatment can be applied. The treatment included of seven basic principles:
  1. Both partners are included in treatment, since the sexual dysfunction affects both people.
  2. Therapy often includes education on sexual anatomy, people are often misinforced about sexual organ, sexual response, and how to arouse their partners.
  3. Negative attitudes about sex are explored; however deeply buried, they often emerge as part of the problem.
  4. The role of anxiety in the dysfunction is also explored. Often, people are so worried about how well they are "performing" that they take on a spectator role while engaged in sex and don't let themselves spontaneously enjoy the experience.
  5. Therapy also aims to reduce the anxiety by redefining sex as a pleasure instead of a test of skill.
  6. Tension in the couple's overall relationship are also explored, since they often contribute to a sexual problem.
  7. Finally sex therapists offer the couple ideas on how to change their sexual behavior.
At the beginning, couples are often urged to forget about intercourse altogether for a while and to learn to enjoy simply caressing each other again. In the case of some dysfunctions, such as premature ejaculation and vaginismus, specific sexual exercises may be prescribed.
